I need an illustration for the contrast that exists in what is a succesfull scientist in the western world and in Japan.
Western model.
The most successful western scientist is typically someone who “stands on the shoulders of giants”, including personal mentors. He or she rapidly makes many incremental steps and thus publishes prolifically !*many small outcomes. Following this path is facilitated by effective communication, which together with accumulated knowledge, make up the basis of the mentoring system. The power distance between the two is minimum.
Japanese model.
In contrast, a Japanese scientist is typically regarded as successful if he or she is a completely self-reliant self-starter. Moreover, he or she is expected to have tackled a large complicated problem, and the scientist’s publishing record marks his or her itinerary on the way to that solution a single major outcome! In this context, a mentor is simply a role model that guides only by example, and the mentor’s achievements are an ideal for students to aspire to emulate. The power distance between the two is very high.

In fact, the essential difference is where does the initial question come from. The western scientist follows up.The japanese scientist defines unique questions.

There can be one image or, better, two separate but coordinated images, perhaps along the lines of those in the attached files. We need to contrast standing vs watching the shoulders of giants and/or incremental vs off-the-ground (from scratch) progress.

  is there a major benefit to using 3D? I am interested in illustrating as many aspects as possible in the two models and contrasting them. If your 3D can support this better and free softwares to visuals it exit, i am willing to install and use them.

In the japanese model, the relationship is one of inclusion but not of dependence. Not sure how to illustrate this.

Your graphics of the scientist allow us to envision he is a scholar. I like his strong shoulders. But there are major problems. Why are the two people in the western model looking down? Make them look like they have a shared vision moving forward not backwards.In the japnese model he cannot have strong shoulders because he is not supporting in the same way. His apprentice learns by example.
