When you pick up a white bread sandwich, you choose bad carbohydrates that could be potentially harmful for your health. Whereas, if you choose a wholegrain bread, you are wiser!
While all foods contain some amount of carbohydrates, there’s always a difference between the sources that are healthful and harmful.
The Good and Bad Side of Carbohydrates
Carbs are known to have an unstable reputation; in fact, it is a questionable nutrient with varied opinions. Touted as one of the most feared foods, some people have given up carbs completely. On the contrary, there are opinions stating that carbohydrates, when chosen with care, is a healthful nutrient that can lower risk of several chronic diseases.
Luckily, good carbs can be separated from bad carbs – we can get the healthy sources of carbs by making educated choices. For instance, carbs containing fiber is healthy as it takes time to get absorbed into the system, thus preventing sudden blood sugar spikes. Sources include vegetables, beans, fruits, and whole grains.
We can also reduce health risks associated with bad carbohydrates by simply avoiding processed and refined foods that eliminate fiber, such as white rice and white bread.
