I need an essay, about 4 pages (double spaced), written as a comparative analysis of two of Jane Austen's works. Choose one text and one adaptation we’ve read in class (You can also use Northanger Abbey as an adaptation of The Female Qixote, P&P as an adaptation or update of NA, or any of the more clear adaptations we’ve watched/discussed) Write a 4-4.5 page comparative analysis in which you trace the changes the adaptation makes. Start by asking yourself what has changed and why? Construct a complex argument in which you analyze one or more major changes that speak to social issues (scientific advancement, class, gender, race, sexuality, etc.). How are nineteenth-century discussions of this issue similar to or different from contemporary discussions of similar themes/anxieties? How do adaptations use change as a way to signal readers to the text’s argument? What can we learn from what mimics the original and what challenges it? How does contemporary perception converse with the original text’s subversive arguments or modify them? To what extent are these changes conservative or radical/subversive? Why is there such a strong interest today in Jane Austen? You may draw on any of the texts we’ve read and conversations we’ve had, but your argument must move beyond them.
