I have (8) C code, (5) header, and (7) assembly files which makeup a program for a agricultural implement guidance controller. I have not compile the C code for over 8 years and am out of touch with to process. I originally used the AVR-GCC compiler version 3.4.5. The design used the MCU ATMega161 which is now obsolete. The source code needs to be compiled for the ATMega16A. I could spend untold time trying to hack away at compiling the code and eventually get it done, maybe.

Your microcontroller, even if it's "old", is never "outdated"; if it does the job it is supposed to do, then it is good enough. That's what a microcontroller is: a processor that's meant to do one thing, and one thing only. What benefits would you gain from a newer one? Did you try a newer AVR-GCC?
