Here is a brief overview of the E2MC (Echolocation to Mouse Click) project we are looking at bringing in software developers for. Let me know if you need more details or if this covers the basics for vetting developers for the job.
The hardware:
PXI Chassis
PXI card with 8 inputs x2
15 hydrophones arranged in a 5 x 3 grid that feeds into the PXI cards
The software needed:
We need software, preferably written in C#, that in real time analyzes the 15 inputs, segregates echolocation from ambient noise, normalizes the 15 inputs and then plots where the most likely strongest point of echolocation in the grid is. Then the software will convert that to a screen coordinate, and plot a mouse click on that location on the screen.
Resources:
We have a consultant, Josefin Starkehammer, who has written a paper on doing this exact thing, who can provide advice and information on dolphin echolocation frequencies to help cancel ambient noise that is not echolocation.
We have the hardware needed to start a proof of concept, with 4 hydrophones. We can record and provide the wave files of recorded echolocations in our environment. We have a PXI card for the purpose of recording input, and the ability to push the sounds out through output. The idea is for debugging/troubleshooting we can take recorded sounds, and feed the output into the main input on the PXI input cards to reproduce echolocations taken from the lagoon
The hardware is located in the Florida Keys, and we can set up remote access, but part of the initial development may require hands on access.
Timeline: We would like to get started as soon as possible. Given the nature of the project and unknowns we are aware there will be unforeseen obstacles and pitfalls that could delay development. After a proof of concept is built with our 4 existing hydrophones, and we are confident the design of the hydrophone will meet our needs, we will have to order the 11 remaining hydrophones. These are custom made and generally have a 2-3 month turn around, during which time development may be delayed
