Hi, I have experience for 15+ years in electronics / embedded systems development. I have worked before with several STM32 and SAMD microcontrollers. From low level hardware interfacing to higher level application code - from boot/reset to application (bare-metal) with and without RTOS support. I have also adapted several existing bootloaders for several architectures, adding support for specific same family cores. Also implemented bootloaders from scratch for older architectures (8051, PIC) on some legacy embedded systems. For your project, I propose adding support for SAMR21E16 in an existing Atmel SAM-BA standard bootloader. It supports both USB and UART based protocols for interacting with the MCU. Your main application firmware will only need to be compiled/linked taking into account the existing bootloader reserved flash space. Bootloader will be first programmed into the board and then your main application is loaded through the bootloader. Timeframe and budget are subject to change, depending on more detailed information about your project itself, mainly hardware schematics and some details that are not clear in your project description.
