I'm not sure how much sensitivity should be need, but I think your project is like an one axis of a 3D printer.I can make it with Manual, Bluetooth or remote controlled. Stop sensing is not necessary with sensors. Software ca be do that.

Hello, I am a student of Politecnico di Torino and I can design such controller for you. I just need to know how slow do you need the slider? Because it changes a lot by means of motor control to the selection of the motor and the decoder etc.. Let say in the slowest mode, like time-lapse, etc., the slide finishes sliding from left to right the whole stick in 6 hours or 10 minutes whatever. Best regards
