Biotechnology is the use of living organisms or biological systems in industrial undertakings. For example: in agriculture, manufacturing, medicine, waste management and public health.
Living cells are adapted to perform numerous functions in the environment, in plants and in animals. Biotechnology involves using these adapted cells or parts of cells depending on the functions they perform, to achieve the desired goal.
Over the last 40 years, scientists have started to use sub-cellular materials e.g. genes, amino acids, nucleic acids and DNA to achieve desired goals. Scientists are now even able to synthetically manufacture DNA.
An example of a biotechnological invention is the insertion of genes from Bacillus thuringiensis (a bacteria) into cotton plants to make the plant resistant to Lepidoptera (butterfly) insect larvae. Another example is the creation and use of bacteria of the genus Pseudomonas by Ananda Chakrabarty to degrade several constituents of crude oil. This bacteria is used to clear up oil spills in the oceans.
