Hello, We could say there is no single "best practice" because it's tightly coupled to project size and type (e.g. api or web) i believe. On a small project, lets say 1-3 developers could handle, or a mid sized project (3-10 devs) it's relatively easy to handle end-to-end automation (4-5 layers of tests + auto deployment) but when the project gets bigger and bigger, it could be very time consuming to write 4 or more layers of tests. So, the first question should be "what do i need to test?". E.g. if you are building and API interface no need to push to write acceptance tests just because articles say so...
