On a daily basis, I have modified assignments, projects and tests for a variety of exceptionalities. Modifications can take many forms, depending on the purpose of the assessments. Some simple modifications are to change the format of the questions. Often essay questions are very difficult for students with ADHD. Multiple choice questions often help them demonstrate that they know the material without the burden of organizing a lengthy written answer. In addition questions can be formatted to provide more guidance for students with exceptionalities. For short explanations you can add a number of terms that need to be included in the response. Or the student may be asked to complete the sentence to demonstrate their knowledge. Modifications can also take the form of allowing students to dictate their responses or to use a computer for writing tasks for content subjects. Often students cannot remember formulas well but they are able to apply the formulas correctly. This is another form of modification. So the student may be granted permission to bring a study guide into the test or the instructor may provide the student with the formulae that will be needed on the test.
