In 1663, King Charles created a proprietary colony south of Virginia called Carolina. However, Carolina did not progress as planned and ended up splitting into two colonies. The northern and southern parts had completely different traits. Northern Carolina grew tobacco, sold timber and tar. Southern Carolina took advantage of the fertile lands and good harbors. They also traded deerskin, lumber, and beef. In the early 1700s, Carolinas settlers grew tired of the proprietor rule. Eventually, settlers in southern Carolina took control from the proprietors. In 1729 Carolina became two Royal Colonies-North and South Carolina. The change generated a land increase in the colony as the Crown eased land purchase requirements and sent out the equivalent of real estate agents to drum up business. Their work, and the encouragement of royal governors, provoke in North Carolina that lasted from 1730 until the American Revolution.
