ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES
In order to complete the assessment task detailed below, please consult literature on how to critique research articles, and also draw on your knowledge and understanding of research methodologies as appropriate.
The assessment task is as follows:
Part 1 (1,000 words) (25%)
a) Identify a specific area of your practice of interest to you. b) Identify what you consider to be the most carefully executed and/or most superior individual study on this specific topic. c) Write an account of why you have identified this study as superior to others on the topic, commenting specifically on its methodology and what it adds to knowledge in the field.
Part 2 (4,000 words) (75%)
Identify between two and four1 other published research studies on the same topic as that identified in Part 1. At least one of these studies must have utilised a qualitative methodology and at least one a quantitative methodology.
Appraise the standard of the following components of each study:
• The title • The abstract • The introduction/background • The methods section • Findings/results • Discussion • Conclusion.
Please provide a copy of the report/article of the studies being critiqued as supplementary material. At the start of your critique of each individual study, please supply the full reference. You may draw on the methodology literature to support any critical points you raise in the course of your critique.
The number of studies you chose to critique (two, three or four) will normally depend on the length and style of these studies, and your own critical assessment of them while staying within the word count for this exercise
