Raspberry PI Overlay Text an Image with Dispmanx or OpenGL

We are using Raspberry PI to display videos and images with omxplayer.
We need to overlay text and images on top of the video
The text and Images (PNG with transparent background) should be positioned dynamically over the video (setting the x and y position)
Furthermore a scrolling text as overlay is needed.
To dynamically change the Text and Images some kind of API is needed.
My suggestion would be some kind of JSON API.
Raspberry PI offers the Dispmanx API to do overlay.
