Project is to mimic our existing "piece meal" system which is based on Office 97 for estimating, job costing, and accounting.
We are currently using Excel, Access, Word and an archaic accounting program named Real World.
I believe that a good solution is to utilize VB and SQL Server.
***********
What we use now:
Office 97
Excel for estimating, Word for bidding documents, Access for database and reporting.
Real World for accounting ??" GL, AP AR
This program will do one of two things:
Emulate estimating (Excel), bidding proposals (Word) database (Access) and the various job cost reports we use to maintain our empirical data for estimating.
The owner is adamant about the appearance of the estimating templates ??" they (we have about 15) must look like an Excel 97 spreadsheet ??" AND have the same capability for calculations and links
Most of our users are familiar with Access 97 forms, so I figured VB for the similarity.
I have attached a couple screen shots to help you visualize our environment.
This program must be able to link the estimate (spreadsheet) to the proposal (Word doc) to a purchase order (Access form) all linked to one central database. For example, we have scheduled tasks which automatically update the estimating templates nightly with the current material prices in the database.
When we open a new purchase order and enter the job and sub job numbers, the form is populated with the materials from the estimate for that job ??" or we see a popup with the materials listed.
Have basic accounting capabilities such as GL, AP, AR and some flexible reporting.
OR:
Have built in functionality like Excel, Word and SQL Server, and provide an interface with Intuit’s Quickbooks or equivalent accounting software.
