Rock paintings found from around 30,000 BCE, are thought to be the earliest form of written communication, and the Chinese alphabet still uses picture symbols as the basis for their version of the alphabet today. The earliest roots of formal writing come from around 3,000 BCE, reflected in Egyptian archaeological finds.
After pictograms, Cuneiform developed in the Middle East, with symbols representing sounds, and Egyptian hieroglyphics followed. The writing we know today was developed from the Phoenician alphabet, a system that used symbols to represent consonants, and from this alphabet came the Aramaic script and the Greek alphabet. The Latin alphabet evolved from this, featuring symbols for both consonants and vowels.
As man developed hunting tools, writing implements were also in the research and development phase. As clay tablets fell into disuse, ink, and quills were favoured for papyrus. Gutenberg's printing press- circa 1450, allowed the mass publication of writing and may be the reason for the information overload we are facing today.
Whether its symbols or words, good, intelligent writing remains the cornerstone of civilization, delivered by content writers who can still paint a picture as early man did, but on a laptop.
